OSAC is a state agency established in 1959 to help Oregon students pay for postsecondary education and training. The Commission administers, or helps to administer, nearly 400 privately funded scholarship programs. In addition to private scholarships, OSAC administers the Oregon Opportunity Grant , the state’s largest need-based grant. These programs help students attend public or private four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, and vocational institutions.
A major benefit of the OSAC application is the use of one common application for the 400+ scholarships available. Students can apply for up to 20 scholarships administered by OSAC using only one application and eliminating the need to fill out multiple applications.Using the OSAC application can increase the student's chance of receiving multiple awards. Each year, OSAC processes nearly 10,000 applications, 99% that are filed electronically. More than $14 million was awarded to 3,400 Oregon students (2008). The scholarship application resides on the agency's sister website www.GetCollegeFunds.org.
OSAC scholarship programs are established in partnership with private individuals and organizations as varied as The Ford Family Foundation, Stimson Lumber Company, Ford Family Foundation of Roseburg, La Grande High School Alumni Association, and Portland Teachers’ Credit Union. Awards are also sponsored by civic and membership organizations, employers, and through trust funds at The Oregon Community Foundation, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and Bank of America.
